Poland’s opposition to Gazprom’s proposed Nord Stream 2 pipeline is not motivated by concern that the project could jeopardise transit fees which Warsaw earns from the Yamal Pipeline, a senior Polish official said on Tuesday.
„Poland will not lose transit income because there isn’t any,” said Piotr Naimski, the government’s official responsible for key energy infrastructure.
Naimski, a former deputy economy minister, noted EuRoPol Gaz, which owns the Polish stretch of the Yamal Pipeline, makes less than 21 million zlotys ($5.55 million) a year under a 2010 agreement between the governments of Poland and Russia.
Poland imports most of the 16 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas it consumes each year from Russia but the government is looking to reduce its reliance on those imports. It does not intend to extend a long-term gas supply deal with Gazprom after it expires in 2022.
It remains unclear what will happen to the 33 bcm of gas a year which Gazprom sends via Poland through the Yamal Pipeline from Russia to Germany.
The government opposes Gazprom’s plan to double the capacity of the 55 bcm Nord Stream pipeline which crosses the Baltic Sea to Germany, arguing it will strengthen Gazprom’s dominant position in the region.
